Years ago, homesteading settlers travelling east from the Appalachian Mountains encountered the first large grasslands they had ever seen. Today, we call these areas prairies. But in those days, the explorers were unfamiliar with the French word. They called these grasslands - the barrens. Today, however, theres nothing barren about Barren River Lake State Resort.
